Our Story

Kipper & Chalk started in 2019 because founder, Imogen Johnson-Gilbert, wanted to work somewhere which combined the craft, tradition and meticulous attention to detail she learned working on Savile Row, with the vibrancy and approachability she discovered during her time on Jermyn Street.

And if you can’t find it, build it.

Kipper & Chalk took its name from old tailoring slang for a female tailor (a Kipper) and a piece of tailor’s chalk, a tool used everyday for everything from striking out a suit to marking up pockets; a tool used by cutters and tailors alike.

This is to highlight that Kipper & Chalk has drawn from the traditions and history of bespoke tailoring but has left behind some of the airs and graces. Although Imogen’s background is in bespoke tailoring, Kipper & Chalk was founded in order to make custom tailoring more accessible and welcoming.

As well as more bespoke requests, Kipper & Chalk offers a full range of tailoring services including alterations.

There is a time and a place for both the exquisite traditions of bespoke tailoring and its more contemporary cousins.

Kipper & Chalk can help you decide which you need for which occasion.

Kipper & Chalk, Autumn 2020

In October 2020, Kipper & Chalk opened the doors of its new shop in the heart of Pimlico. The shop is bright and airy, with high ceilings and a great big window. Whether you are after a new suit or just a chat, an afternoon of sifting through luxurious cloth swatches is always time well spent.

We can't wait to see you.
